What is Your Academic Standing?
Your Academic Standing is a measure of how well you are progressing toward your degree. It is based on your semester or cumulative grade point average (GPA). Academic Standing is processed each semester after grades post. Students whose standing is Academic Alert or Academic Probation at the end of the semester are notified by email by Student Success shortly following the posting of grades. The email includes information about UCA’s Academic Recovery Process and resources available to assist students. Students on suspension are notified by email by the Office of the Registrar, and information about the UCAN Program for students on first academic suspension is sent out from the Coordinator of Student Success.
For more information on Academic Standing, please see section 7 of the Undergraduate Bulletin.
The Academic Recovery Process
Students on Academic Alert or Academic Probation can improve their academic standing during the next semester through intentional reflection on the personal and academic challenges that they have faced, and efforts to address these challenges. UCA staff work to help students improve their skills and outcomes through the university’s Academic Recovery Process.
If your academic standing is:
- Academic Alert, you will be required to meet at least once with a UCA Peer Coach to review challenges faced in previous semesters and develop a plan for improvement.
- First Probation, you will be required to attend an initial information session, and then complete at least one Success Coaching session during which you will identify goals for improvement. We encourage you to take advantage of a follow-up coaching session as well.
- Continuing Probation, you will be required to submit a Success Plan and then schedule a session with a Success Coach to review and implement your plan.
- First Suspension, you may be eligible to participate in the UCAN program.
An alert or probation hold is placed on a student’s account until these requirements are met. The hold prevents advance registration for future terms.
Please watch your UCA email account early in the semester for information from Student Success on meeting the requirements for the Academic Recovery Program.
Students are also strongly advised to meet with their academic advisor to review their current degree progress, and to attend Academic Success Workshops throughout the semester to improve their study strategies and time management skills. We know you can improve your academic standing, and are here to help.
Do you Have a Probation Hold?
Academic Alert and Probation holds are placed on student accounts after the 11th day of class for each semester. This hold prevents registration for future terms.
Students with a Student Success hold must meet Academic Recovery Process requirements (see above) to have their hold removed. To meet with a Peer Coach you can either schedule an appointment through Slate in myUCA or by visiting the Coaching Lab in the Student Success Center (appointments are preferred).
